6. Commemoration after cremation;

a)      Unless cremated remains are interred in an existing grave, they must be interred in a part of the churchyard specifically reserved for the purpose. The reservation of a part of the churchyard for this purpose requires the authority of a faculty.

b)      In an area of the churchyard which has been set aside by faculty, the faculty may include provision for properly bedded tablets of stone to be laid flush with the surrounding ground and not exceeding 450mm x 300mm (18 x I2ins).However, it is desirable that no memorial should be erected or laid in the place of interment and that details should be recorded in a book of remembrance in the church.

7.  Applications for any monuments other than those mentioned in rule 5, for example, free standing stone crosses and reclining books must be referred to the Diocesan Registrar for consideration by the Chancellor as to whether the authority of a faculty is required. If a cross is desired, it is better incorporated on the face of a monument.

Photographs, porcelain portraits, railings, chains, chippings, raised curbs or glass shades are not permitted.

8. All monuments must be made of natural stone or hardwood. The use of marble or synthetic stone is not permitted.

Local stone appropriate to the stonework of the church is strongly encouraged and the Diocesan Advisory Committee maintains a list of stones suitable for use in the Diocese. A copy of this list is obtainable either from the Incumbent or Priest-in-Charge or from the Secretary of the Diocesan Advisory Committee.

Applications for permission to use any other stone must be made to the Diocesan Registrar for directions by the Chancellor after consultation with the Diocesan Advisory Committee.

9. Stones must not have highly polished reflecting finishes. Smooth dressing, without polishing, enables letters to be cut legibly: but if tinting is desired, it must be done a shade darker or lighter than the natural colour of the stone and not in gold.
